Jeff Gallagher Wins Midwest Classic @ Blackwolf Run

Kohler, WI - the best weather we've ever had for this major championship. 70s, a light breeze and great course conditions made for some exciting golf. 18 MN Am Tour members made the 5-1/2 hour trip to the shores of Lake Michigan looking for a shot at glory and they did us proud.

Jeff Gallagher brings home top honors by winning the Palmer flight. His opening round of 83 on the Meadow Valleys course on Saturday put him 7 shots off the lead. While he carded 2 birdies on the back nine, his 3 doubles and a triple pushed him down the leaderboard into 4th place. The Palmer flight took on the famed River course on Sunday in a shotgun start. Jeff opened his round from the 2nd hole with 4 straight pars before suffering back to back bogeys but then had a bounce back birdie. His start on the back nine found him back on the bogey train for 4 holes but once again he jumped off with a birdie. One more bogey on the tough par 4 18th hole finished the back side in 39 but Jeff had one more hole to play. In true champion style he made his 3rd birdie of the round on the par 5 first hole to complete his front nine in 37 for a total of 76 matching the low round of the tournament and a 4 shot victory. MN was well represented in the Palmer flight with 7 players. Mike Kelley finished T-4 but didn't come home empty handed as he won the warm up event at The Bull on Friday. Ben Savage was 11th, Steve Schubert T-13, Mike French T-15 along with Eric Broich in his first event this season. Dean Sengstock finished 20th.

Robert Gardner finished 4th in the Sr. Hogan flight. He opened on the River course on Saturday with an 88, ten shots behind the leader. Robert rebounded with the 2nd lowest round of the day in the flight shooting an 82 on Meadow Valleys to jump up the leaderboard helped by a birdie on the 17th hole. Steve Buan was 15th, Dan Barrett finished 16th and Dean Dubreuil was 22nd.

Ms. Vicki Burns finished in a tie for 5th place in the Jones flight. Vicki set the tone for her weekend with a 93 Saturday on the River course which featured a birdie on the par 5 1st hole. The 93 was the 5th best of the day in Jones. On Sunday she took on Meadow Valleys and shot 95 again the 5th best of the day. Defending champion Jeff Loeffler finished in 16th.

Matt Harter continues his Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hide imitation in major tournaments. Matt has a long history of starting slow and then finishing strong. He played the River on Saturday and struggled to a 104. On Saturday the real Matt showed up on the Meadow Valleys course and shot the best round of the tournament in the Sarazen flight with an 83. A full 7 shots better than any other Sarazen on the day. He finished in in 7th. Tim Palya finished in 11th.

Jeff McVay was our lone representative in the Snead flight. A tough round on Saturday was was followed by a much better round by 16 shots on the River course on Sunday to finish in 14th place.

Anthony Hugelen got off to a good start on day 1 with an 86 on Meadow Valleys putting him only 8 shots back of the lead. The River course took its toll on Sunday with a 92 putting Anthony in 16th. Jon Balvance playing in his first major placed 24th.

The other highlight of this event was the BBQ hosted by Dean Sengstock, Tim Palya and Jon Balvance at the home they rented for the weekend. Thanks to all who attended.

Our next local event is on June 12th at Dellwood. Please register before you head out of town for Memorial Day. Don't forget practice rounds are available on weekends after 2 PM by calling the pro shop.
