St. Croix Valley Championship

Hudson - it looked like it was going to be a tough day but we had the course to ourselves and for the most part dodged the rain.

The Sarazen flight featured a battle between champions. Wayne Scheuermann won our season opener at Willingers and then again at the major championship at Blackwolf Run. Matt Harter won at Territory last weekend. Today they faced each other, Mano y Mano, with nothing to distract them. Matt jumped out to a 2 shot lead on the very first hole that he held on to for the entire front nine. Wayne regained those two strokes on number 11. Then the two counter-punched on 12 and 13 but Wayne gave back two shots on 14. Both stumbled a bit on 16 but Wayne had cut the deficit to 1. Wayne's par/par finish, while Matt struggled to get it into the clubhouse, clinched his third win of the season.

There were two contests that weren't settled in 18 holes.

Always steady Mike Kelley had to go 2 extra holes to defeat first time competitor Nathan Petersen in the Palmer flight. After matching scores on both nines with Nathan, Mike made a birdie on the second playoff hole to grab his second win of the season.

Pete Rojas was looking for his third straight Snead flight victory and was looking good after the front nine in a tie with Jeffrey McVay and first timer Tony Liddell only one shot back. Todd Klocke was a distant 4th, 8 shots out of the lead. While Pete, Jeffrey and Tony had difficulties with the back nine and the weather, Todd showed he's a mudder and made up all 8 shots shooting the lowest nine hole score in the flight to tie Pete. Todd won the playoff on the first hole.

Paul Alexander is usually the player to beat in the Jones flight but he had not yet won this season. But as you'd expect of a champion he bought another new driver and finally persevered today carding a 6 shot victory with the 3rd lowest round of the day. I'm sure his playing competitors will be looking forward to Paul's inevitable performance promotion later this season.

Our next event in two weeks keeps us on the east side of the metro at Stoneridge in Stillwater. This course features some of the best greens in the state. Registration closes on Saturday night the 15th.

There are still a few spots left in the last major of the season at Eagle Ridge in Galena, IL. It's a short 5 hours drive from the Twin Cities and worth the trip. Won't you join the rest of our members already registered?
