January Update

I'm guessing many of you are still in shock over the Miracle in Minneapolis yesterday. I suppose there is a metaphor for golf in that result. Even if you're having a bad round your next shot might be your miracle shot. OK so that's a stretch but I had to get the subject back to golf somehow.
January is a time for resolutions and I have a suggestion for your list. Improve your knowledge of the Rules of Golf. The major rules revision you've probably heard about doesn't go into effect until 2019. Until then we continue to operate under the current Rules. Whether you think you know the rules inside out or you feel you should know them better, winter is a great time to brush up on them. If you want to start with the basics and most common rules used in a round of golf then I suggest you visit the USGA Rules of Golf Experience. There you will find videos and quizzes to review. If you are well versed then I suggest you delve into the principles of golf. Truly understanding the principles will help with even the most difficult situation you encounter on the course. Want even more? Call me or send an e-mail and I'll share some of the materials and practice exams I've used to prepare for the PGA/USGA Rules Exams.
Welcome to these new members since the last update.
  • David Slininger of Ham Lake will play Sarazen
  • Amy Bauch of Minneapolis will play Sr. Snead
  • Gene Stringer of Stillwater will play Sr. Snead
  • Bryan Poetsch of Oak Grove will play Hogan
Is there anything more depressing than getting your handicap index e-mail in the middle of winter when you can't do much about improving it? Some of our members have been playing golf in warmer places.
  • Jack and Steve Buan played the North & South Championship at Terra Lago in Indio, CA. Jack posted rounds of 79/77 in his first tournament on Tour, in the Championship flight. He carded 2 birdies in each round. Uncle Steve shot 91/89 for a T9 in Sr. Hogan. His first round featured an eagle 3 on the 14th hole and a birdie on 16. He also had a birdie on #2 in the second round.

  • Dr. Paul Cink was joined by Dennis and Jeff Draack at TPC Sawgrass. Paul finished 4th in Sr. Jones with rounds of 99/102. He finished a bit better, T3, at the preview tournament at Marsh Landing with a 95. Dennis has family bragging rights after shooting 95/114 in Sr. Sarazen. He bettered son Jeff (Sarazen) by 14 shots and brings home the story of a par on the 17th on the Stadium course.

  • Steve Springer (Sarazen) has played 2 events in the Valley of the Sun.
If you are traveling this winter don't forget to check the local Tour schedule and drop me a note so I can live vicariously through you.
Keep warm,
