The Jewel Recap

Lake City - The Am Tour headed to The Jewel this past weekend but a beautiful day was interrupted by a thunderstorm. It took a few hours longer than expected but we got it in and crowned 6 champions.

Matt Broich playing in his first Am Tour event shot the low round of the day with a fantastic 74 on a tough course and in difficult conditions at times. Matt is a Senior at Woodbury HS and plays in our Championship flight.

The Palmer flight was a hot contest with 6 players within 3 shots of the lead. John Juntilla held the lead after 9 with +1/37 including a birdie on the par 5 8th hole. Dean Sengstock was 3 shots back at 40. Dean's front 9 got off to a great start with a birdie on the 1st hole. Ben Savage, Eric Broich and Jeff Long, visiting from Colorado, shot 42. After about an hour weather delay it was out to the back 9. John, Ben and Eric had trouble on the 10th but Dean and Jeff started with pars. Ben went on to shoot the low back side score of 42 but Dean's 43 was enough for a one shot victory.

Dan Barrett and Anthony Hugelen went toe to toe in Hogan. Dan grabbed a 2 shot lead after 9. Both had difficulty with the tough 12th hole but Anthony was able to get to the clubhouse with minimal damage to the rest of the round for a 3 shot win.

The Sarazen flight needed extra holes to determine a winner. Steven Holland shot a 39 on the front side featuring a hole out for eagle on the short par 4 sixth hole. Ed Favorite was only 2 shots back. Steven's 46 vs Ed's 44 on the back side meant they needed to keep playing. Ed won the title on the first playoff hole.

Warren Ferber played a very steady front side to card a 42, 4 shots ahead of the Vicki Burns and Jeff Loeffler.  Warren increased his lead with pars on 10 and 11 but then had difficulty with the 12th hole and his troubles continued for the remainder of the round. Jeff fell victim to the par 3 11th hole while Vicki got through the 12th with a par and finished strong with a 45 on the back to earn the one shot victory over Jeff.

The Sr. Snead flight was led start to finish by a guest player, Mark Haas. Mark recovered from a quintuple bogey on the first hole (perhaps nerves) to shoot 49 on the front and a 4 shot lead over Mike Jakusz and Peter Rojas. Mark's birdies on 10 and 13 allowed him to withstand setbacks on the closing holes. As guests are not prize eligible the trophy went to Mike Jakusz who was 3 shots back.

Dan Barrett's ride home was a little easier as he had plenty of gas money in his pocket after winning $105 in the 50/50 raffle. The other $105 goes to Feherty's Troops First Foundation bringing total donations this year to $475. Thank you to all who participated.

While it was a long day because of the rain there were lots of great comments about the course.

Our next event is July 19th at The Links at Northfork. We hope to see you there.
