Troy Burne Recap

Hudson, WI - Dubbed the "Pain in the Rain" by newest member Russell Klein. 42 intrepid Am Tour members braved the rain, wind and cold temps as low as 39 with a wind chill of 30. Yet there was still good golf played and we all survived the return of the "O boys" who once again took some of our hardware and money back to Chicago. Fortunately Troy Burne withstood everything Mother Nature threw at it.

Par 4 #10 average score was 6.12, ranked 2nd hardest. Gave up only 1 birdie and 3 pars from 40 players.

Championship flight was a smaller group today as there were a number of injury withdrawals. Points leader Jason Rhoades was attending to his pregnant wife in hospital awaiting their first child. Jack Buan wrenched his back during a MGA qualifier and Daniel Rasmussen's broken finger forced his w/d after nine. We wish them all well. That left Paul Schubring and Tyler VanHecke to dual it out. Paul led by 1 at the turn despite Tyler's 2 birdies on 1 and 4. Paul's carded 2 birdies on 12 and 14 to post 78 which earned him his first win on Tour. Then Paul was off to the airport to watch his son play in the NAIA golf tournament this week.

5 birdies among 8 golfers was indicative of how difficult scoring was in Palmer flight. Anthony Hugelen had one of those on the par 4 7th hole to go along with just 2 bogeys to turn at 1 over. Steve Schubert and Bob Murphy were 4 back. Let's just say there was some carnage on the 10th hole. Peter Heller was able to card the lone par for the flight there to begin a run at Anthony. Anthony never lost the lead however and posted 78 to match the low round of the day. Steve Schubert survived a scorecard playoff with Bob Murphy to claim the 2nd place prize. This is Anthony's 3rd win of the season punching his ticket to our National Championship.

Hogan flight was once again the largest flight of the day. William Brown, playing in his first event here in MN, led at the turn by 2 over veteran Larry Caldwell due to a birdie on the 5th hole. Jon Sanz and Tanner Jandro were 3 back. Robert Gardner matched William with 41 on the back to move into 3rd place. Jonathan Nyquist had the best back nine of the group carding 40 on the back nine when things got really cold. No doubt due to his good planning to bring a cart cover and heater. Good enough to slide up in to 2nd place. William's 2nd birdie on 12 meant he never was in any danger of losing the lead. Tanner W/D'd after nine because he couldn't feel his fingers. They warmed up pretty quickly when he learned he won the 50/50 raffle worth $175.

It took a playoff to determine a winner in Sarazen flight. David Slininger led Steve Buan, Barry Wadsworth and Fredy Alvear by 1 shot after nine. Joe Christy was 4 back. Joe Christy carded a 40, matched by Doug Bird, on the back side. Steve Buan shot 43 and joined Joe in the clubhouse at 87. Barry's bogey on 18 left him one shot shy of the playoff. Joe went on to win the first hole in the playoff over Steve. This is Joe's 2nd win of the season.

The combined Sr. Sarazen/Sr. Jones flight was very competitive. Jack Olichwier, Sr. Jones, led by one over brother Jerome, Sr. Sarazen, at the turn. Mike Miller and Paul Smallwood were one further back. Ed Favorite must have found something to warm him up after nine as he came home in 41 go from the cellar to a tie for 2nd. Jerome bested brother Jack by 3 on the back side to claim bragging rights.

The other two "O boys" fought it out in Snead flight. Jeff and James, along with Stephen Oborn, were tied at 50 after the front nine. Jeff carded a second 50 to beat our Jim by 2. The real story here however is Amy Bauch who continues to put up new personal bests. She carded a flight best back nine 47 to post at 106. Her best round yet on Tour and took home some cash in the Low Net side game while finishing 2nd (66) to Anthony (64) in the overall Net contest.

Closest to the pin went to Tyler VanHecke and James (the good) Olichwier.

Thanks for your ongoing support for Feherty's Troops First Foundation. We added $175 today for a season total of $630.

Special thanks to our good friends the Olichwier brothers ("O boys") for making the trip. We always enjoy your participation and look forward to seeing you again.

Thanks to Nicole Hazen for being a substitute angel this week. We missed, Val and Mary. Thanks Deb for putting in all of the extra work.
