By now you are probably into full withdrawal due to another year with
a short fall season. Now it's the holiday season and you're probably
not thinking much about golf (only every day) while out shopping for
gifts. We've already received a present from Golf's Ruling bodies in the
form of new Rules for 2019. Getting acquainted with the Rules during
your down time is a great way to get ready for the coming season.
Especially those of you that are playing in warm weather this winter as
the Rules take effect on Jan 1. The basic principles of golf are still
the same; play the course as you find it and play the ball as it lies.
In an ideal round you put the ball in play from the tee and don't touch
it again until you pull it out of the hole. Since golfers are not
perfect and golf courses present many challenges we need the Rules to
determine how to proceed when things don't go as planned.
New Rule #1 adds to those principles; play by the Rules and in the spirit of the game, as well as you are responsible for applying your own penalties so that you don't gain any potential advantage.
There are 23 remaining Rules. Golf Digest has a quick read article that identifies many of the changes. For a more in depth review I suggest you take advantage of the USGA Rules education website. There you will find videos that explain the Rules as well as FAQs and quizzes
The Am Tour Hardcard is being updated and should be distributed this month. There is also an updated Player Handbook already posted. I'll also cover some of the changes in future updates.
Our 2019 schedule is online and there have been a couple of date changes. There are also a couple of dates left to fill. I'll keep you posted. Registration will open April 1.
