Crytal Lake Recap

Lakeville - We finally got the Crystal Lake Championship in this past weekend after a postponement due to snow the week before. 31 players took on the scenic Crystal Lake course and survived "The Bog" hole. Many thanks to the staff at Crystal Lake and our friend Wendy Land, Tournament Coordinator.

Hogan flight (including Sr. Hogan) had the best turnout of the week with 13 players looking for the first win of the 2019 season. Matt Harter wasted no time with a birdie on the opening hole. He and Robert Gardner turned at 41 with Larry Caldwell just one shot back with a birdie on 5. Tim Mart was 5 back after a going 7 over on the last 3 holes. Larry shot 43 on the back to post an 85 and then he had to wait to see if it would hold up. About 4 groups behind him was Tim Mart and he was making a move up the board only 1 over on 10-12 and then he birdied the bog hole and the par 3 14th. He played the last 4 holes 2 over to card a 1 over 36, a 10 shot turnaround from the front side, to post 82 for the win. Bill Kelsey and Gary Braun finished T3 at 87.

The other large flight for the day was Sarazen (incl. Sr. Sarazen & Jones) with 8 players. Fredy Alvear shot 43 on the front to lead David Slininger, Warren Ferber (Sr. Sarazen) and Joe Christy (Jones). Fredy didn't let up any on the back side making par on the first 3 and 5 overall for a 40 to post at 83. Joe Christy and David Slininger matched with 45s to tie 2nd at 89. David's 2 birdies on the back gave him the edge in the scorecard playoff for 2nd place by one shot over the last 6 holes.

Jeff McVay jumped out to a 5 shot lead in Snead flight after 9 holes on the strength of a downhill birdie putt on the par 3 eighth. Jeff was 1 shot better on the back to post a 93 for a 12 shot victory. Ms. Amy Bauch continues to improve and was not last on this day finishing 3rd at 106 just one behind perennial high finisher Todd Klocke.

Palmer flight welcomed back 2 players who have been on leave for the past season. Darren Kress and Cliff Anderson (Sr. Palmer). They both shot 3 over on the front to lead the usual suspect Anthony Hugelen by 5 after he opened with a birdie and then hit a wall on 6 holes of the front side. In true champion form however he steadied himself at the turn and went 1 under through 13 with a birdie on the bog hole. He finished the last 5 just 2 over for a 36 to post an 80 just one shot better than Darren.

Jason Rhoades and Steve Schubert went toe-to-toe in Championship flight although Jason was playing under the weather. As the old saying goes, "beware the sick golfer",  Jason was holding a one shot lead at the turn. Steve made pars on 10 & 11 to take the lead but Jason pulled even on 12. They traded shots on 15 & 16. Steve closed out the match with pars on the final 2 holes for the victory posting at 79.

Jeff McVay took home Low Net honors.

Steven Holland and David Slininger won closest to the pin.

Steve Buan took home $135 from the 50/50 raffle. The other $135 goes to Feherty's Troops First Foundation. Thank you for your continuing support.

Thanks to Val and Mary for keeping all of us organized. We missed the third angel, Deb Alexander, as she was home taking care of hubby Paul after he had successful surgery this week. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Keep your fingers crossed the weather holds for one more week as we will finish the Fall Series at Pioneer Creek on Sunday the 28th. Registration is still open. So why not join us because it's a long cold winter until we play again next spring.
