Victory Links Recap

Blaine - Our first visit to Victory Links was met with hot, windy weather and fescue as far as the eye can see. Those that stayed out of the tall stuff the best were crowned Champion.

Zach Johnson posted the low round of the day with a 1 over 72 in the Championship flight. Zach took the front side by 2 with birdies on 5 & 8. The entire flight had trouble with the first couple of holes on the back until John Juntilla made an eagle on the 12th. Jason Rhoades caught Zach at 13. Both birdied 14. Zach stayed on that birdie run through 17 to earn the 5 shot victory, his 2nd.

The Hogan flight needed an extra hole to determine a winner. Anthony Hugelen posted 39 on the front and Buck Sexton did the same on the back. In between there must have been a whole lot of fescue. Anthony won on the first playoff hole for his 4th victory of the season and 3rd in a row.

Jeffrey Kovash earned his 1st victory on Tour but didn't know about it until he got home. Bob Murphy led the Palmer flight by 1 at the turn over Jeffrey and Scott Schirmers. I guess Jeffrey thought the double bogey on 15 must have hurt his chances even though he made birdie on 17. So he left after turning in his scorecard. When the final groups came in he was still in the lead. So no picture but I suspect he'll find the winners circle again.

Robert Gardner notched his first victory of the season in Sr. Hogan with a one shot win over Steven Holland. Steven, in a different pairing, held a 2 shot lead through 7 holes before giving up the lead for good on the 8th. Steven posted 82 and had to sit and wait to see if it would hold up. Robert posted a matching back nine score to nip Steven.

Peter Martinez grabbed his second victory in as many starts in Sarazen. He posted a 79 to win by 4 shots over Jon Sanz on the strength of 4 birdies. Golf is a game of opposites but even this seems odd. He birdied both par 3s on the front and then doubled both par 3s on the back. He was even on both front par 5s but birdied both on the back.

Jeff McVay led the Sr. Snead flight by 2, with a 43 front, over Steve Oborn. To say that Mike Miller got off to a bad start would be an understatement. At 11 over after 3 holes and posting a 49 on the front you can imagine some players would just phone in the back side. But not a 4 time winner!  You would think that he didn't stand much of a chance of catching the field being 5 over on 4 holes on the back side but he was 3 under the other 5 holes to come home in 38 and a 2 shot victory over Paul Alexander. This is Mike's 5th victory of the season!

The Jones flight was tight with all 4 players within 2 shots at the turn. Jeff Loeffler posted a 39 on the back with a birdie on 14. George Hardgrove was a par making machine on 6 holes of the back side and was in the hunt but for a couple of misfortunes on 12 and 15. This was Jeff's 2nd win of the season.

2 were tied at 45 in Sr. Sarazen at the turn, Warren Ferber and Steve Springer. They were still tied through 14. Steve stumbled at 15 and giving Warren a 4 shot swing. He held on to win by 2. This was Warren's 3rd win on the season.

Paul Alexander was low net.

Zach Johnson and Todd Klocke won closest to the pin.

Mike French took home an extra $165 from the 50/50 raffle. Our season long total is now $1,140. Thanks for your continued support.

Thanks to Rich Stoker for joining us from the Milwaukee Tour.

Thanks to my Angels as always.

20 MN Tour players will be heading to Polk City and the Tournament Club of Iowa for the 2nd annual KC/MN Challenge next Saturday.

Our next tournament is a Tour favorite. Troy Burne will host on Jul 22nd. Registration deadline is Saturday the 14th. I hear there is a caravan of Milwaukee Tour players coming to try and spoil the party. Let's make sure they go home empty handed.
