Troy Burne Recap

Hudson - The best tournament day all season. Perfect weather, conditions and a great host course. It's fitting to play Troy Burne on The Open Sunday where the first Italian winner was crowned Champion Golfer of the year and three MN Am Tour members earned their first trophies.

We all hope to be just one shot better than everybody else when searching for our first win, wondering if the nerves will hold up in the crunch. Steve Oborn didn't have to worry as he took command right out of the gate in Sr. Snead flight going just 5 over for the first 6 holes and led by 5 after 9. That lead was 8 by the time he got back to the clubhouse.

Erik Jordahl claimed his first victory but it wasn't easy. He trailed George Hardgrove by 2 shots at the turn. Erik gave the rest of the Jones flight 3 or 4 shots on the 2nd hole but gathered himself and finished with a birdie on the tough 9th hole. That birdie must have ignited something as Erik came home in 41 to win the back side by 3 over newly promoted Mike Miller.

Expectant Dad Jonathan Nyquist was likely playing in his last tournament of the season so he probably felt extra pressure to get that first victory in Hogan flight on his resume', but it didn't show. He led Buck Sexton by 3 shots at the turn with the best front nine score of the day at 38 featuring a birdie on the par 5 fifth. Anthony Hugelen, winner of the last 4 tournaments, was 4 back at the turn but showed his metal when he came home in 39 to Jonathan's 42 to fall just one short.

Once again the Palmer flight posts the low round of the day, 76. Front side scores were unremarkable but Peter Heller's 40 led by 1 over Jeffrey Kovash and Scott Schirmers. Peter grabbed the tournament by the throat going 3 under on the first 6 of the back nine with a birdie on 10 and adding two more on 12 and 14. It looked like the round might be really special until 16 where Peter gave back 4 shots. He recovered to par in and finish the back one over for a 4 shot win, 2nd of the season and 5th overall.

The other 76 came from Jason Rhoades in the Championship flight also shooting 40 front and 36 back to win by 7. His lone birdie came on the par 3 13th. This was Jason's 5th win of the season and 11th career.

Doug Bird put up 2 birdies on #6 and #8 to take a 3 shot lead after nine holes over 3 time winner in 2018 Ed Favorite and Steve Springer. Ed's back nine 40 was good but not good enough as Doug shot 39 to extend his lead to 4. This was Doug's first of the season and 6th career win.

Robert Gardner really only needed 9 holes to decide the Sr. Hogan flight as he had a 7 shot lead at the turn. He carded a birdie on the always difficult to putt 6th hole.  Gary Braun made a charge with a fine 39 on the back but it wasn't enough to catch up to Robert even though he was stumbling home a bit. Robert's 2nd win and 7th overall.

The Sarazen flight looked determined to take down the undefeated Peter Martinez as 5 of 6 players were equal or better at the turn.  Jon Sanz and David Slininger led the pack at 43. Jon stumbled on #10 with a bad tee shot and watched the others fly by. Then he went even par over the next 4 before making back to back birdies on 15 and 16. Peter also made back to back birdies on 14 and 15, then finished with 3 pars to post a 38 to Jon's 39 to fall one short. Jon's 2nd win of the season gives him 4 for his career.

Amy Bauch and Bill Kelsey won closest to the pin.

Erik Jordahl took home Low Net.

Mike Burgett won the 50/50 worth $165. This gives us a season total of $1305. Thank you for your ongoing support for Feherty's Troops First Foundation.

It was great to have 2 visitors from the Milwaukee Tour join us for the tournament. Special thanks to Mike Berndt and Tour Director Ritch Williams for making the trip. We hope to see you again.

We were also fortunate to have 2 guests this week. Mr. Brad Williams and Mr. Doyle Johnson. We hope you had a good experience and will consider joining us.

As always I couldn't do this without my angels, Mary and Deb. We missed Val this week.

Our last tournament before our Tour Championship is at beautiful Baker National in Medina. Members who recently played there say it's in great shape. Registration deadline is this Saturday night. Please join us.
